What everyone shares.
What is only yours.

In every hotel a line runs between what everyone shares and what is only yours. Eighteen hotels are read along that one line, from a village where the street does the work of a corridor to a berth closed by a blind.

How to read it
Every hotel here is written in three blocks and in the same order. What is shared sets out the halls, yards, baths, kitchens and paths that belong to the whole house. What is yours sets out the room, cabin, capsule or villa and what encloses it. Where the line falls names the thing itself: a door, a curtain, a stair, a path. None of it describes rules for guests.
